Resting Metabolic Rate Test

Do you know how many calories YOU need each day? There are several ways to calculate the estimated amount of calories your body needs to function each day. However, these calculations are not always the most accurate.  If you consume an extra 100 calories each day, you will gain about ten pounds in only one year!

Get your Resting Metabolic Rate tested today to know what your unique energy needs are. This test is non-invasive and takes only 15 minutes.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

What is Metabolism?
Your metabolism is the specific amount of calories your body uses. Your body burns calories every minute, whether you're working, exercising or even sleeping. The majority of the calories your body needs each day is just to keep your body functioning. This includes functions such as breathing, heart beat, and brain activity and they are referred to as your resting metabolic rate (RMR). Your RMR accounts for up to 75% of the calories you burn each day.

Despite what the latest news flash might say, weight management is an equation of calories consumed versus calories used. The total amount of calories you need are determined by your RMR, your lifestyle, and your exercise level.

Why Does Metabolism Matter?
No matter what you eat, it is impossible to lose weight unless you eat less calories than you burn.  It sounds like a simple equation, however, it’s hard to do unless you truly know how many calories your body requires. Your unique metabolic rate is the missing piece to the weight management puzzle.

What is an indirect calorimetry test?
When calorie levels are assessed using equations, it can be off by as many as 500 calories. Eating just 200 more calories than you burn each day will result in a weight gain of 20 pounds in only one year.

An indirect calorimeter machine is an instrument used to determine your RMR by measuring the air you exhale into the machine. This simple breath test measures oxygen consumption and then calculates your unique RMR.

How is the test administered?
It's simple; you breathe through a small instrument that measures oxygen consumption for a short period of time, usually five minutes.  While it is non-invasive, some may find it slightly uncomfortable because you must breathe through your mouth during the test.

What else do I need to know about this test?
Much like having your blood tested for cholesterol or glucose, there are a few guidelines that are important to follow in order to get an accurate measurement.

Before your test:

  • Do not eat for at least 4 hours

  • Do not exercise for at least 4 hours (aerobic or strength training)

  • Do not consume caffeine, nutritional supplements, or medications containing ephedra, Ma Huang, or pseudoephedrine for 4 hours

  • Do not smoke or use nicotine for 1 hour

It is also recommended that you bring a book or magazine to browse through while the test is being administered.
