Corporate Programs

The cost of obesity to organizations is estimated at more than 12 billion dollars per year! Higher health care costs, lowered productivity, increased absenteeism and increased health and disability insurance premiums all contribute to this financial burden. (Finklestein, 2005)

Americans are working longer hours, performing sedentary jobs and have less time for physical activity, all of which put them at risk for overweight and obesity.  How does this affect corporate America?  It affects the bottom line.

Your employees are your best resource.  However, when many of your employees are overweight or obese, it can negatively affect overall productivity leading to lost dollars.

Obesity is a complex problem due to multiple factors such as genetics, lifestyle and environment. Many environmental issues today include the workplace.

Obesity and Work Force Facts:

  • $460-$2500 spent per obese employee due to medical expenses and absenteeism (Finklestein, 2005)
  • 5 to 8  missed work days per year for obese employees verses the average of 3 missed work days per year of normal weight employees (Finklestein, 2005)
  • 45 days per person - average length of time for short term disability claims due to obesity related health problems (Finklestein, 2005)
  • $285,000  - Cost of obesity to a 1,000 person firm (Finklestein, 2005)
  • $2274 in annual health care costs per person for those with a BMI above 27 verses $1499 for employees below that level (Burton, 1998)

Employers have an important role to play in offering a healthy work environment that includes providing your employees with several key components to increase worksite wellness such as:

  • Personal health practices – opportunity to make healthy lifestyle choices that support long term health and well being
  • Physical environment -  a healthy, well designed and safe area to allow for physical activity
  • Psychosocial -  a business “culture” that supports employee well-being and effective work practices

Promoting employee services that encourage healthy habits and make incentives available to employees for making beneficial lifestyle changes will serve to enhance your business and increase your bottom line. Weight loss interventions work and can reduce many of the comorbid diseases associated with obesity and subsequent financial costs.  Effective weight loss involves more than just a better choice of food; it requires a multifaceted approach that encompasses lifestyle changes, behavior modification, health related knowledge and skills. We are here to help.

At Nutrition Matters, LLC, we have programs designed to assist your employees to make changes in their lifestyle that will enable effective long term weight loss.
